Step aboard one of our restored open-top jeeps for the jungle safari Chitwan is known for. An experienced driver and a naturalist lead every drive, heading for the parts of the park where sightings are most likely at that time of year.

The route moves through riverine forest, sal forest and open grassland, the habitats shared by one-horned rhino, sloth bear, gaur, wild elephant, crocodile and, for the lucky few, the Bengal tiger. Your naturalist reads tracks, alarm calls and the general mood of the forest as you go, and there is usually a stop at a viewing point or on the riverbank along the way.

A jeep covers far more ground than a walk and offers a comfortable way to explore the park. It also suits guests who would rather watch than trek. Our team shares what they know about the flora, fauna and history of the park along the way, including its early years as Royal Chitwan National Park, gazetted in 1973 as Nepal’s first national park.

Half-day drives leave in the early morning or mid-afternoon, when animals are most active. A full day takes you deeper into the park with a packed lunch.

Important Note

• Jeep Safaris: Jeep safaris inside Chitwan National Park are closed by the park authorities during the monsoon season, generally from June to September, and in some years, the closure may extend into October. Guests planning to travel during this period are advised to check safari availability in advance.
• Elephant Rides and Our Position: Elephant safari rides are still available elsewhere in Chitwan, but Sanctuary Resort does not include a Chitwan elephant safari in any of our packages, out of respect for the wellbeing of trained elephants. We support the ongoing care and preservation of Chitwan’s wildlife. Guests who would still like an elephant ride can be put in touch with outside operators and their itinerary arranged around it.
